The Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is located at Longley Lane, Manchester and is capable of processing 90,000 tonnes of material each year.

It sorts commingled recycling (glass bottles and jars, food and drink cans, foil, aerosols and plastic bottles) from the kerbside collections across the Greater Manchester area.

The commingled recycling is delivered to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) where they are sorted using a range of state of the art technologies.



After the commingled recycling from resident’s kerbside collection is delivered, a quality inspection is conducted to remove large contaminants.


The commingled recycled travels through a conveyor system where it first enters a pre-sort cabin, which removes any other contaminants.

Over-band magnet

An over-band magnet separates out any steel cans.

Glass breaker

Glass bottles and jars travel through a breaker screen and then onto a clean–up system where it is refined further and sorted into two fractions.

Eddy current separator

An eddy current separator is used to separate aluminium foil and cans, which are then baled for recycling.


The plastic bottles are then divided into the following different types: HDPE, PET and other mixed plastic by Aladdin using infra-red and air jets.

Quality Check

The separated streams of plastic are sent for quality control, then punctured and squashed, ready for baling.
