Multiply (external website) is a new government-funded national programme to help adults aged 19+ who do not already have a Level 2 in Maths/Numeracy (or equivalent) to improve their numeracy skills.

This funding will support residents to become more confident with numbers and progress them on in life. It will also increase the number of adults participating in and achieving their Level 2 or equivalent in Maths. 

Multiply in Greater Manchester

£14m has been allocated to Greater Manchester to deliver Multiply up to March 2025.

The Investment Plan for Multiply in Greater Manchester outlines six key strands of activity (see below). These will provide different and innovative numeracy and maths training for those who would not normally consider accessing the usual adult skills offer, including the hardest to reach residents in Greater Manchester. All strands will complement, rather than duplicate or displace existing devolved Adult Education Budget activity.

This offer will provide a relevant and accessible Multiply skills offer across Greater Manchester aimed at those residents within the most deprived areas of GM.

This will engage residents with short courses relevant to them, with a view of progressing onto relevant further learning, including Maths qualifications.

This offer includes 43x courses across 5 themes:
1. Numeracy Confident
2. Healthy / Independent Living
3. Reducing cost-of-living
4. Finance and Debt
5. Numeracy for Employability

This commission also includes the “Link to Wider Skills Offer” activity within the investment plan which will provide intensive progression and goal planning for residents completing their first Multiply course.

This has now been commissioned and will be delivered by The Growth Company and a wide range of supply chain partners.

This will offer additional support and help for Greater Manchester residents enrolled on Level 2 Maths via AEB, but who might not achieve their qualification. This might be because they withdraw from the course or fail the exam.

This support was ring-fenced to current Greater Manchester AEB providers delivering Level 2 Maths qualifications.

13x GM Colleges & Local Authority providers are offering this additional support in the 2022/23 academic year, supporting c.1200 learners to achieve.

This commission will offer VCSE/Third sector organisations the opportunity to carry out outreach and engagement work to support residents hardest to reach onto a Multiply opportunity.
