Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is to run the Great Manchester Run 10k in aid of his homelessness fund, after it passed the £10,000 mark.
However Andy Burnham won't be the only Mayor taking on the Great Manchester run as Manchester's Lord Mayor, Carl Austin-Behan is also set to don his running shoes. Cllr Austin-Behan will be running to raise funds for the Lord Mayor’s charity, We Love MCR.
Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said: "I've been humbled by the overwhelming response we've had since I launched my Homelessness Fund. Hundreds of people have dug deep and shown real compassion for their fellow Greater Mancunians.
"But we’re just getting started. Later this month I’ll be running the Great Manchester Run 10k alongside Manchester’s Lord Mayor to raise even more for my Homelessness Fund. I hope people right across Greater Manchester will continue to give what they can and together we can show that rough sleeping and homelessness are not inevitable consequences of a 21st Century economy”
Lord Mayor of Manchester, Carl Austin-Behan said: "This event brings Mancunians together. While people are running for so many fantastic charities I'm proud to be running for the Lord Mayor's Charity, We Love MCR, which improves the lives and life chances of Manchester people."
On Monday, as his first act in office, Andy Burnham launched the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Homelessness Fund and donated 15 per cent of his salary to kick start the fund. The fund is a key part of the Mayor's efforts to end rough sleeping in Greater Manchester by 2020. On Thursday the fund passed £10,000 with over 330 individuals donating. Donations to the fund can be made here - www.gofundme.com/gm-mayoral-fund.
The Lord Mayor's Charity, We Love MCR Charity improves the lives and life chances of Manchester people. The organisation supports the residents of Manchester who are in the greatest need to reach their full potential. Every penny raised stays in Manchester, helping to bring positive benefits to communities throughout the City.
This is the 15th year of the Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run and more than 300,000 people have crossed the finish line since it was first staged in 2003. Each year the run sees huge sums raised for a whole host of Charities.
The newly added half marathon has reached its entry limit but limited places are still available for the 10k distance. There will also be Junior and Mini Great Manchester Run happening on the same day (May 28). The run will be covered live on BBC 2 from Noon – 2.30pm, with highlights from 5pm.
