Andy Burnham visits Prestwich for first town centre challenge meeting

LOCAL business owners and shoppers in Prestwich were visited by Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham and Councillor Rishi Shori as plans to rejuvenate the town centre get underway.

The trip was part of The Town Centre Challenge – a new initiative which strives to breathe new life into urban areas across Greater Manchester.

Shop owners and customers stopped to chat with Andy and Rishi about their concerns for the town centre and how they are personally contributing to its development.

The walk around town was followed by a meeting at the Longfield Centre to discuss issues and potential solutions to problems facing Prestwich, with key leaders from the local community attending.

Andy said: “This new initiative is all about working together to regenerate town centres across Greater Manchester which have felt left behind.

“The Challenge represents a significant opportunity for councils to drive forward real and sustainable change. The time has come to breathe new life into our proud towns.”

This meeting was the first of many planned for all the nominated town centres.
