Greater Manchester libraries launch new initiative to help local people start their own businesses.
Greater Manchester libraries are introducing a new initiative that aims to help people across the city region launch their own start-up businesses.
The Big Ideas Generators project will deliver personalised one-to-one business information sessions to visitors at libraries across all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester. Library visitors will also have the opportunity to attend 'How to' sessions and workshops to help them with their new business ventures.
The project is focused on reaching residents across the city region, particularly people currently under represented in the business world, such as women and BAME residents.
Participants will be able to develop ideas that could be turned into start-up businesses and provide the chance to learn about trading through courses on eBay and Etsy.
The libraries will become informal networking spaces enabling budding entrepreneurs to link up with each other and share ideas.
Local people will be given access to vital information and digital support to help turn their ideas into reality. Specialist training in skills such as 3D printing will also be on offer.
In March, Greater Manchester libraries were awarded £250,000 by Arts Council England as part of the Libraries Innovation Fund. This funding will now be used to support the Big Ideas Generators project.
Sir Richard Leese, Deputy Mayor for Economic Growth and Business, and Leader of Manchester City Council said:
“Our libraries are vital community hubs, where everybody, no matter their age or background, is able to access the latest information and technologies. This is an exciting opportunity to boost to our business community across the city region, and ensure local people are able to reach their full potential.”
