Greater Manchester marks the start of Black History Month with Civic Launch event
Civic leaders, community leads and residents from across the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester came together on the 25th September at the Manchester Cathedral to officially commence the city-region’s celebration of Black History Month.
Organised by the Caribbean & African Health Network (CAHN) and supported by GMCA. The event included merchandise stalls, musical performances, poetry, artwork and a fashion show from Issik House of Prints. An African-inspired brand that celebrates Black heritage based in Manchester. Speaking at the event, Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham stated:
“One of the things I want to address is not just black history but black future. What we're going to do to unlock the talents of all of our communities, including our black community and our young people, going forward and change things in a way perhaps they’ve not changed enough in the past.”

Black History Month is a vital time for both reflection and celebration. As part of the civic celebration, we’ve worked with CAHN to compile a directory of events happening across Greater Manchester throughout October. This directory gives visibility to a wide range of events in the city-region, including educational workshops, galas, music events, cultural performances, exhibitions, and discussions: BHM Directory New – CAHN (external website)
CAHN will also be celebrating individuals and organisations making significant contributions to our city through a digital campaign on their social media. This campaign highlights the positive impact of these changemakers and their contributions to Greater Manchester.
We invite everyone in Greater Manchester to participate in the month-long series of events. Whether by attending community events, hearing from those with lived experiences, or using your online platform to highlight the celebration, there are countless ways to get involved and show support throughout Black History Month.
