Mayor of Greater Manchester gives statement for Holodomor Commemoration
Today, Greater Manchester stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian community as we reflect on the Holodomor genocide.
Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said:
"As we reflect on the tragedy of the Holodomor genocide, we remember the countless men, women, boys and girls who had bright futures ahead of them, only to be taken cruelly from this world. These were people with hopes and dreams who must never be forgotten.
"In Greater Manchester, we rightfully recognise the Holodomor as a barbaric act of genocide, caused by a man-made famine, that claimed millions of lives, marking one of the darkest chapters in human history.
"This recognition led the leaders of Greater Manchester to adopt a resolution earlier this year, formally acknowledging the Holodomor as an act of genocide and recognizing today, the fourth Saturday of November, as a day of remembrance for the innocent victims of the Holodomor.
"Tragically, the Russian government, 90 years after the Holodomor, has not ceased its aggression. It seeks to subjugate Ukraine once again and prevent the democratic will of the Ukrainian people. The current conflict has seen the Russian government committing war crimes and human rights abuses in Ukraine.
"In these critical times, it is imperative for the UK and its allies to unite in support of the Ukrainian people in their conflict with Russia. We must not allow Russia to prevail in achieving its objectives in Ukraine. It is essential that we continue to support Ukraine in every possible way. The UK government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine, and it is essential that our allies do the same.
"It is only through unity that we can ensure such barbarity is never repeated. Silence allows these atrocities to occur, so let us vow to never be silent, never to look away and never to turn a blind eye to the suffering of our fellow humans.
"And I can proudly say that Greater Manchester and the wider world have not looked at Ukraine with a blind eye. We are committed to helping Ukraine in any way we can and supporting the will of the Ukrainian people to live freely.
"I am proud to say that Greater Manchester stands firmly in support of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people."
