Memorial service celebrates life of Sir Tony Lloyd MP
A special service of thanksgiving to celebrate the life and work of Sir Tony Lloyd MP was held at Manchester Cathedral today.
Sir Tony was the Member of Parliament for Rochdale from 2017 until his death in January last year. He also served as Police and Crime Commissioner for Greater Manchester between 2012 and 2017, combining this post with that of the interim mayor of our city-region from 2015 to 2017. He was also an MP for Stretford between 1983 and 1997 and an MP for Manchester Central from 1997 to 2012.
Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said:
“Tony has been terribly missed in the last year by his family, friends and the many people across Greater Manchester who knew, loved and respected him, and whose lives were improved by his work.
“He brought people together, resolved differences and played a big part in the progress the country made in that period. His record of service to Greater Manchester is unparalleled. We will forever be grateful to him for establishing the foundations upon which the success of our city-region is now being built.
“The number of us who gathered to remember him today is testament to the strength of both his character and his devotion to Greater Manchester and its people."
