Greater Manchester Joint Waste Plan

The Joint Waste Development Plan Document (the ‘Waste Plan’) was produced on behalf of the ten Greater Manchester Authorities and delivers the spatial vision for waste development.  The Waste Plan sets out policies to guide future waste development and identifies sites and areas suitable for the location of waste development across Greater Manchester to 2027.

Preparation of the Waste Plan began in 2006 and included a number of consultation stages, which informed the approach taken in the Plan. The Waste Plan was submitted to the Secretary of State and underwent an independent examination during 2011.  Following this, the Planning Inspectorate confirmed that the Waste Plan, with recommended modifications, was sound and met all necessary legislative requirements.

The Waste Plan was formally adopted by each of the ten Greater Manchester authorities and came into force on 1 April 2012.  It forms part of the statutory Development Plan for each authority and is used alongside district-specific planning documents for the purpose of determining planning applications.
