Police, Fire and Crime Panel
Supported by the Police and Crime Steering Group, the Police, Fire and Crime Panel is responsible for holding the Deputy Mayor for Policing, Crime, Criminal Justice and Fire to account on policing and fire and rescue issues.
With 17 members in total – made up of 10 appointed councillors from each of the Greater Manchester local authority areas, five co-opted political members, and two independent members – the panel is consulted on regarding precept proposals and the police and crime plan, the fire plan and the proposed allocation of budget for fire and rescue functions. The panel works to ensure that the actions and decisions made by the Deputy Mayor reflect public priorities.
The panel is currently chaired by Councillor Janet Emsley from Rochdale Borough Council.
Independent member recruitment
In July 2024, GMCA began recruitment for two new independent members to join the panel.
The two new members will sit on the panel for three years, starting from 1st November 2024, and will join other members of the panel to give direction and shape future strategies on police, crime and fire issues that affect Greater Manchester.
Independent members play a key role in providing transparency and accountability for the public on the activities of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. It is an important and challenging role offering the chance to review key actions and decisions and make a difference for the people and communities of our city-region.
You must be aged over 18, live in Greater Manchester, and meet the criteria set out in the role specification.
