Greater Manchester High Rise Task Force

Greater Manchester High Rise Task Force

Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in June 2017, Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham set up the Greater Manchester High Rise Taskforce to provide fire safety reassurance, building-by-building, and get us to a point where we can assure all residents their homes are safe. In 2021, the Taskforce’s remit was extended and became the High Rise and Building Safety Taskforce.

Led by Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett, the Taskforce includes landlords across the city-region in both private and public ownership, Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service (GMFRS) (external website), representatives from our ten local authorities, and other specialist officers.

The Taskforce is overseeing Greater Manchester’s implementation of the findings of public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire, as well as the region’s response to the new building and fire safety regulations.

In partnership with the Taskforce, GMFRS has carried out proactive inspections of all high rise residential premises and other buildings to ensure they comply with fire safety regulations, and people feel safe in their homes. The Service is working with local authorities, residents, housing providers, and national government to help make our buildings safe.

As part of this work, GMFRS is also offering residents a Home Fire Safety Assessment (HFSA). During the visits, GMFRS staff will discuss health advice, crime prevention as well as fire safety advice.
