Protecting our environment

We’re rethinking the way we deal with waste to create opportunities for social value, nature and our communities.

The vision for Greater Manchester is to make the city region a greener, fairer and more prosperous place.

Five things we’re doing to change waste:

  1. Rethinking waste assets. We transformed 2 ex-landfill sites into forests with City of Trees.

  2. Dedicated Sustainability Champions.  Finding ways to make room for nature at our waste sites.

  3. Decarbonisation. Working towards reducing the carbon impact of our waste facilities

  4. Tackling biodiversity loss. 90,000 honey bees call recycling centres home after hives were created at two sites.

  5. Closing the loop on food. Your food and garden waste is made into compost which helps to grow wheat on farms close by. Which is turned into bread in the North West.
