Active Ageing

Active lives are a key pillar of the Ageing Hub’s work, helping people remain active for longer is a key component of healthy ageing. However, older people in Greater Manchester are less active than the England average - 34.8% of Greater Manchester adults aged 55 and over are inactive – meaning they participate in physical activity for less than 30 minutes a week. This is higher than the Northwest (33.7%) and England (32%).

By 2034, we envision that more older Greater Manchester residents are regularly participating in creative activities, culture and heritage, enhancing their health and happiness. Fewer older Greater Manchester residents are inactive thanks to more widespread, affordable, and accessible leisure and fitness provision which provides social benefits.

Our Work:

We work closely with Greater Manchester Moving (external link), Greater Manchester’s movement for movement. A key priority within the GM Moving Strategy (external link) is to celebrate an active life in older age in a way that is age positive and inclusive, dismantling systemic ageism, creating, and embedding age-friendly language, structures, spaces, places and activities.

In collaboration with GM Moving, we have developed the Community of Learning for Active Ageing, which convenes partners across Greater Manchester organisations to share learning and find ways to increase physical activity levels in older adults.
